Massage

What can a massage do for me?
Treat the spirit with the therapy of touch.
Massage is one of the oldest and simplest forms of therapy. Massage is a system of stroking, pressing and kneading different parts of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. Gentle massage affects the nervous system through nerve endings in the skin, stimulating the release of endorphins ( the body’s natural “feel good” chemicals) to help induce relaxation and a sense of well being. Massage does more than create a pleasant sensation on the skin. It works on the soft tissues, including the muscles, tendons and ligaments, to improve muscle tone.
Our bodies and posture are held in balance by the muscular system. In order for you to stand still or move there are various muscles throughout the body constantly tightening and slackening to maintain the movement or stillness you desire. If one or more of your muscles becomes too weak or tight your posture will be thrown out and your body will deliberately put other muscles out of their normal state to compensate. If this is not corrected, it will over a period of time become the accepted state of your body and you will have a muscle imbalance until treated. This is why we recommend a combination of pilates and massage sessions. While pilates will help restore balance and strengthen weak muscles, a massage can further release the “bully” muscles that are sending your body into misalignment.
Although a single massage will be enjoyable, the effects of massage are cumulative and a course of massage treatments will bring the most benefits.
